Asia is the world’s largest and most populated continent, spanning the Eastern and Northern Hemispheres. It shares the Eurasia continental landmass with Europe and the Afro-Eurasia continental landmass with Europe and Africa. Asia comprises 44,579,000 square kilometers (17,212,000 square miles), or around 30 percent of the total land area and 8.7% of the Earth’s total surface area. Many of the world’s early civilizations were founded on this continent, which has long been home to the vast bulk of humanity. Its 4.5 billion people account for nearly 60% of the world’s population (as of June 2019). Asia is roughly defined by the Pacific Ocean on the east, the Indian Ocean on the south, and the Arctic Ocean on the north.
