DAY 01: AMMAN
Upon arrival, a member of our staff will meet you at Amman International Airport. Transfer to hotel in Amman. Dinner & overnight at hotel – HB Basis.
DAY 02: AMMAN DESERT CASTLES
Breakfast at the hotel. This morning your driver will pick you up and you will head north from Amman to the Eastern Desert. You will visit three of the region’s famous desert castles built by the powerful Umayyad dynasty in the — UNESCO-listed Qusayr Amra, Qasr Kharana and Qasr al-Azraq. Qusayr Amra was once an Umayyad hunting hideaway. The impeccably preserved castle is now best-known for its 8th-century frescoes that depict hedonistic scenes of nude women, wine and wild times. Next stop is the impressive 2 story Qasr Kharana where Mesopotamian, Arabic and Greek influences are all apparent inside its walls. Qasr Al-Azraq is a built from black bassalt and was built as a hunting lodge by the Umayyads, but is more famously known as TE Lawrences headquarters in more recent history. Arriving back in Amman you explore the city on a City Tour. Amman, is a bustling modern city. The historical places are located in downtown, where you visit the Citadel with remains from the Roman to the early Islamic period. Located at the Citadel is the Archaeological Museum. You will stroll via the Souq, where you get an idea of everyday life, to the Roman Theatre from 2nd century with 6000 seats. Your driver will be with you to transfer you to the sites on the Amman City Tour but the driver cannot enter the sites with you. Dinner & Overnight Amman Hotel including breakfast.
DAY 03: AMMAN – JERASH – AJLOUN
Breakfast at the hotel. Your driver will meet you in the lobby of the hotel in the morning. Drive 50 km in the north to Jerash, the well-preserved city of the Roman Empire, often called Pompeii of the East. Initially built by Alexander the Great, the town started to prosper after the Roman conquest, and was one of the Decapolis cities in northern Jordan. You will have a 1.5 hr. guided tour in Jerash. Visit Hadrian’s Arch, built in 130 ADS to honor the visit of Emperor Hadrian. Pass the Hippodrome offering space for 15,000 spectators, the impressing Forum, continue to the Temple of Artemis, which columns are 12 meters high and each drum weights 20-40 tons. Other highlights are the Colonnaded Street and the Nymphaeum. Then transfer through a beautiful pine-forest and olive groves, reaching the city of Ajouan, here you will find Al-Rabid Castle; the 12th century Castle built by one of Saladin’s lieutenants in the campaign against the Crusaders. You will explore the castle by yourself. It is an easy site to explore by yourself, back to Amman. Dinner & overnight in Amman – HB Basis.
DAY 04: AMMAN – MADABA – MONT NEBO – KERAK – PETRA
Breakfast at the hotel, then drive to the south from Amman, along the 5000-year-old King’s Highway; one of the most memorable journeys in the Holy Land passing to through a string of ancient sites visiting Madaba; “The City of Mosaics” a typical East Bank town: Then coming to Mt. Nebo where Moses has gone to get a view of the Promised Land before he died and from a platform in front of the church one can enjoy a breathtaking view across the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea. At the beginning of the afternoon, continue south to visit Kerak with its magnificent Crusader castles “Crack des Moabites”, by the end of the day transfer direct to the Nabateans City of Petra for dinner & overnight. – HB Basis
DAY 05: PETRA – WADI RUM
Breakfast at the hotel, and start a half day tour to discover the Nabateans City of Petra, the “pink city”, which has been ranked New Wonders of the World Heritage of Humanity, it’s the home of the Nabateans; The complete city carved in a mountain with the huge colorful rocks that called “the red rose city”. The tour will start by crossing the “Siq” which is an impressive 1200 M long, deep and narrow gorge of stunning natural beauty. The Siq s hammed in by cliffs soaring up to 80 Meters. Then just when you think you have seen enough dazzling sights in the Siq, you will face with Al-Khazneh (the treasury) the pride of all Jordanians. The architectural style of it was unique in the ancient world, main inspiration was Hellenistic. Transfer to “Little Petra’, a part of Necropolis city, you will enjoy the view over the spectacular canyon. At the end of the day, Proceed to Wadi Rum, Dinner & Overnight at a Bedouin camp.
DAY 06: WADI RUM – AQABA
Breakfast at the hotel, then continue to Wadi Rum – then enjoy 2 hours Jeep tour in the desert, visiting: Lawrence house, Siq Lawrence. proceed to the lowest point on the Earth, transfer to the Dead Sea, which is one of the most spectacular natural and spiritual landscapes in the whole world; it is the lowest point on earth, and the world’s richest source of natural salts, hiding wonderful treasures that accumulated throughout thousands of years. Free time to swim and to enjoy the salty water – Dinner & Overnight – HB Basis.
AQABA CASTLE:
Also known as Mamluk Fort, this castle incorporates a huge amount of history. Built by Christian crusaders in the 1100s, it was destroyed by Saladin and rebuilt by the Mamluk dynasty in the 1500s. Later, in 1917, it was pivotal in the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire, made famous by Lawrence of Arabia. Just seek out the 130-metre flagpole adjacent if you’re having trouble finding it.
SOUKS IN AQABA:
A busy port for centuries, Aqaba’s traders certainly known how to bargain. A stroll through the city’s many souks, or markets, is a must. Divided by type, you’ll find local fruits and vegetables around Raghad a Street, and the rich aroma of heaped spices around Zaha ran Street. For mementos, head to the Friday night Souk by the Sea, which has all manner of items handcrafted by local artists.
ARCHAEOLOGY MUSEUM:
The Archaeology Museum is opposite the castle. It occupies the former residence of Sharif Hussein bin Ali, King of the Hejaz (part of modern-day Saudi Arabia). Its collections cover some 6,000 years of continuous habitation. Look out for the bronze age Lady of Aqaba, and early Islamic inscriptions from the ninth century AD.
SHARIF HUSSEIN BIN ALI MOSQUE:
Though only constructed in 1975, this active place of worship is a wonderful example of traditional Islamic architecture. Its gleaming white stone is intricately carved amid arched doorways and onion domes. Outside of prayer times, visitors can walk through its colonnaded marble courtyards to take in the spectacle close up.
RUINS OF AYLA:
In close proximity to Aqaba’s main hotel district, Ayla was the first Islamic city built outside the Arabian Peninsula. Dating to around 650 ADS, it was only rediscovered in 1989. An important stop in route to Mecca, its ruins include the city walls 2.5 meters thick, gateways, and a mosque.
DAY 07: AQABA – DEAD SEA
