North America
Overview
The continent of North America lies entirely within the Northern Hemisphere and almost entirely within the Western Hemisphere. It comprises the northern subcontinent of the Americas and shares borders with the Arctic Ocean to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, South America and the Caribbean Sea to the southeast, and the Pacific Ocean to the west and south. Geographically, Greenland is part of the continent because it sits on the North American Tectonic Plate.
North America is the world’s third-largest continent by area, covering approximately 24.5 million square kilometers. It is home to 23 countries, including Canada, the United States, and Mexico, as well as various territories and dependencies. The continent features diverse geography, including vast mountain ranges, rugged coastlines, expansive plains, and deserts. Its rich natural resources, such as oil, natural gas, and minerals, have played a significant role in its economic development.
