South America
Overview
South America, located entirely in the Western Hemisphere and mostly in the Southern Hemisphere. With a relatively small portion in the Northern Hemisphere, it can also be described as the southern subcontinent of the Americas. The reference to South America instead of other regions (like Latin America or the Southern Cone) has increased in recent decades due to changing geopolitical dynamics. The continent shares borders with the Pacific Ocean on the west and the Atlantic Ocean on the north and east. While North America and the Caribbean Sea lie to the northwest.
In terms of area, South America is the fourth largest continent. Covering approximately 17.8 million square kilometers. It comprises 12 countries. This includes Brazil, Argentina, and Colombia, as well as various territories and dependencies. The continent boasts a diverse geography. Including the Amazon rainforest, the Andes mountain range, the Atacama Desert, and the Patagonian glaciers. It is also home to a variety of unique wildlife species, such as jaguars, pumas, llamas, and alpacas.
